Wakan Tanka
The concept of the great mystery from the Lakota Sioux tribe resonates deeply with me. I am impressed by this graceful acceptance of the unknowable.
They may have names different from Wakan Tanka, but, in essence, many traditions share this concept of a collective font of creativity and energy. This marks the bond between chemical, biological, botanical, electromagnetic, physical, and metaphysical that makes us all part of the ONE. It’s the scale that judges us as equals, whether we be alga, amoeba, lioness, or man.
In this age of hubris, I take quiet comfort from these traditions where man accepts the role of caretaker rather than conqueror. In this series, I’ve explored many principles from indigenous philosophies, mythologies, and motifs. I’ve tried to translate these into my own visual vocabulary. Like many artists I admire greatly, I’ve used geometry to express spiritual concepts.
