Calico Cornfield

A brief study of Aztec art brought me to the place where I could do my own interpretation of corn as a symbol of rebirth, fertility, and the creative spirit.
Calico corn is another term for the multi-color variety often called “Indian corn.” This piece is built on a scarf holder that provided the motif of many circles. The multi-color aspect show a reverence for nature’s design. The green area is the place where ideas propagate and multiply like seeds. I think of the green as the earth and the embellished circles as flowers.
